This form, known as a “lidded box,” was created as an urn but could be used simply as a decorative piece. It has a capacity of 72 cubic inches and has a solid brass threaded fitting that allows the lid to be securely screwed in place.
The urn is fashioned from cherry and quilted maple accented with dyed black veneer. The screw-on lid is turned from a solid piece of highly figured maple. The top and bottom of the urn contain concentric rings of cherry and quilted maple, and the lower portion features a scalloped accent. The urn is finished with multiple coats of durable gloss polyurethane.
Ted utilized a technique known as stave construction to create the rectangular turning blank that was hollowed and shaped on a wood lathe.
Stave technique involves bevel cutting individual pieces of wood, then joining them edge to edge and laminating them together. Think of the staves in a barrel. There is a lot of precise cutting and fitting involved in creating a cylinder from rectangular pieces of wood.
Care Instructions: Fingerprints and dust can be removed with a soft cloth. Please do not store the urn near a source of heat.
