About Ted

Ted Heuer, woodturner

Welcome to Ted’s Woodshop, the website of woodturner and craftsman Ted Heuer. I specialize in functional art that is intended to be used and enjoyed. I create all of my work in my small shop in Homer, Alaska. Nothing is mass produced. I individually handcraft each of my items and rarely — if ever — make two pieces that are identical.

I have been a woodworker for over 30 years. My wife and I came to Alaska in 1982, never dreaming that this would be our permanent home. I retired in 2007 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as Refuge Manager of the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge headquartered in Fairbanks.

Hardwoods I Use

I enjoy working with all types of hardwoods, domestic and exotic. I use only the highest-quality boards in my work, and I especially seek out highly-figured woods and burls. Some of the wood that I use costs more than $50/board foot. Only rarely do I use stains or tints because I prefer to showcase the natural colors and grains of woods. I am particularly fond of working with quality hardwoods that have been recycled from old buildings.

As a participant in the Made in Alaska program, I label each of my items with the bear and cub logo. This signifies that my work is produced in Alaska and meets the program’s certification requirements.

Where To Purchase My Work

I, along with my wife (and business partner) Beth, have operated Ted’s Woodshop in Homer since 2008. My work can be purchased online through this site. You can also find my work year-round at Ptarmigan Arts Gallery in Homer, seasonally (summer only) through Diamond Ridge Art Studio on the Homer Spit, and during the holiday shopping season at the Homer Nutcracker Faire. You can follow Ted’s Woodshop on Facebook and Instagram, where Beth posts updates and photos of new items.

Use and Care

My handcrafted wooden items can be safely cleaned with a damp cloth and wiped dry with a soft towel. Of critical importance, items are not dishwasher safe and should never be left to soak in a sink. I provide use and care instructions with each item.

Custom and Special Orders

I am available to create custom pieces, using woods of the buyer’s choice, and am also available to do custom precision woodworking upon request. Please contact me with your custom woodworking inquiries.
